Re-Genus Secures Seed Funding and Welcomes Industry Leaders to Drive Regenerative Farming Solutions
Re-Genus, a natural fertiliser company, has officially launched with seed investment from Planetary Impact Ventures.
The company, co-led by founder Daniel Iddon and Katie Critchlow, former CEO of NatureMetrics, is developing an alternative to synthetic fertilisers by harnessing the power of soil microbiomes, including beneficial fungi, to enhance crop growth.
The fertiliser is made, and more than 99% sourced, in the UK, with their natural microbiome ‘starter’ being produced in a woodland in Wales. The seed funding aims to help the company scale up rapidly in the UK before expanding internationally.
Daniel and Katie will be supported by Martin Nye, who is joining as chair, bringing extensive board experience of the circular economy, food, farming, forestry and renewables sectors. Martin also chairs the Soil Association charity, a post which he is leaving later in the year, giving him a good perspective on developments within organic and regenerative agriculture, a key early market for the company.
All Re-Genus products contain a combination of three key ingredients;
- Re-Grow – A natural, fungi-filled compost ‘starter’;
- Re-Feed – Natural and sustainable sources of nutrition, and;
- Re-Vive – Natural bulk materials sourced as residues from other industries, promoting the circular economy
This combination of ingredients works by re-establishing and feeding the natural microbiome in soils. The microbiome plus the natural nutrition then feed the crops.
This restores natural soil processes with the explicit aim to reduce reliance on all fertilisers by bringing nature back to lend a helping hand. This benefits both farmers and the environment.
“Agriculture has long overlooked the vital role of soil biology in plant health,” said Iddon. “Our approach supports growers by working with nature to build resilient, productive soils.”
Critchlow added, “This is an important step in making farming more sustainable and profitable. By regenerating soils, we’re helping farmers improve yields while creating a positive environmental impact.”
Planetary Impact Ventures invests in companies that aim to build business models that can operate within planetary boundaries. Its evergreen fund structure enables it to invest patient capital within agriculture, food and biodiversity. Planetary Impact Venture’s Partner Morten Koefoed said “the possibility to replace synthetic fertilisers has huge positive impact for soil health, reduced pollution/less nutrient runoff and lower greenhouse gas emissions as well as overall biodiversity restoration. We’re excited to invest and partner with Re-Genus and explore the potential to disrupt this industry at scale.’
Re-Genus has set an ambitious goal of capturing 1% of the global fertiliser market within a decade. The company’s products are already available for use in agriculture, forestry, and horticulture. The team will be discussing their work at upcoming industry events, including the Groundswell and Agroforestry shows.
